Photo Manipulation
Due to my previous work experience I have a lot of knowledge of Photoshop and was really looking forward to creating this piece. One of my favourite artists is Hajime Sorayama and his surreal and futuristic aesthetic is something I love so I wanted to base this piece around a futuristic robot.
Thankfully I was able to find some relevant images on Unsplash and set to work compiling them in a composition that told the story of a climber who has discovered an alien robot.

One of my biggest priorities was ensuring each element was on it’s own layer so that I could edit it non destructively to make the piece flow and to compile the images in a way that made them look uniform. To achieve this I removed any unwanted areas of the images and added a gradient map to blend the colours of the individual images into a uniform colour palette. I duplicated the image of the man and used it to add a reflection to the robot in order to make the image more believable. I also added a noise filter to give a vintage look to the piece as I felt it was reminiscent of an 80’s Sci-Fi movie and I wanted to replicate the look of vintage film.

In conclusion, this was definitely the piece that I felt the most comfortable making as I had enough knowledge of Photoshop to dive straight into the creativity and wasn’t limited by my lack of knowledge. I’m really please with the outcome and am happy to have applied my previously developed skills to this piece. In the future, I want to understand other software as well as I do Photoshop as I’ve learned from creating this piece that the less restricted I feel using the Software the more creative I can be within it due to lack of limitations. I will apply this thinking to developing my knowledge of Procreate in order to master it’s tools and features as many of my future pieces of work will be developed in Procreate.
