Going into this piece I felt very nervous as I’m a complete beginner when it comes to drawing characters and using anatomy. I do however know that understanding anatomy is fundamental in creating characters and understanding movement in Game Development so thought it best to do some research before starting this piece.

I spent many hours watching videos on the finer details of drawing anatomy and felt as a beginner I needed to take a step back and look at a more starter friendly approach. Proko’s video on anatomy really helped as it began with building the body with simple shapes and gradually building up the details from there. I therefore took this approach to my piece and found that procreates layers really helped as it allowed me to view the underlying structure of my character when building it up.

To start I used a thick red pencil to outline the body’s general shape, I used red so that even when I turned down the opacity I could still clearly view the structure of the body. I then used a blue pencil to outline the basic outline of the limbs and to mark where the facial features would go.

As I developed the drawing further I found that I didn’t have enough time to study the smaller details of the body such as fingers, toes and how clothing draped on my character as Anatomy itself takes years to study and master. Moreover, I focused more on getting a final character developed over spending hours on the smaller details and the result can be seen below.

I’m happy with how this piece turned out as it is a reflection of the techniques I have learned in regards to anatomy but I’m very aware of how much I have to learn in this area. Again, anatomy is clearly a fundamental building block in creating art and I would love to study it further to better understand the physics and construction of characters and will aim to undertake some extra curricular studies or classes in this area to broaden my skills. Additionally, as I really struggled with the complexity of anatomy I didn’t have time to add any colour or background imagery to my work and feel that this would have really improved the quality and look of the piece.
