1 Point Perspective
As I had little knowledge of creating a piece of work using 1 point perspective I felt I needed further guidance in order to create a piece that followed the brief. I researched tutorials online that not only demonstrated this technique but also showed how to use Procreate to achieve this. After finding a suitable tutorial I began by locating Procreate’s perspective tool (Ideal for this task!) and added my vanishing point and horizon to a new canvas. This created a great base to work from and ensured that I had effective guidelines to follow.
I then researched landscapes and cityscapes to find a suitable subject as I felt the harsh vertical and horizontal lines would provide a great opportunity to adhere to the guidelines without the distraction of finer details.
From the guides I placed earlier I used Procreates 6B Pencil to sketch my initial guides ensuring to follow the background lines. Once happy with my sketch I then used the layers panel to reduce the opacity to make it easier to draw on top of.

Following this I then used an inking brush to add defined black lines over my sketch on a new layer to ensure I could turn it on and off at will to ensure I’m following the sketch. Once I’d inked the outlines I then added street lamps and trees at varying sizes depending on their depth of placement on the canvas. I ensured that all details reduced in size as they got closer to the horizon and vanishing point to reinforce a realistic sense of depth.

As I used an ink style brush for the outlines I decided to go for a comic book style for the piece as it suited the monochromatic colour scheme well and enabled me to mimic professional pieces such as the work of David Lapham.

In conclusion, I’m pleased with my progression and understanding of a technique I’ve never used before although I do feel I need to develop my skills further. On this piece in particular I’ve not managed to get the lines that compose the archways on the bottom right of the piece to align properly to the guidelines which does limit the overall perspective effect. I’d like to research this technique further as I believe it’s applications are wide and will definitely provide a good basis for designing games going forward as it’s inevitable that in the future I will need to develop perspective landscapes within game engines.
